THE FLAME ROOM

Our group began in the flame room where the primary artist/instructor was:

Becky Congdon, Glass Artist

-

Here we initially learned how to make glass beads, using a stainless steel mandrel, upon which we dropped/let flow melted glass from a glass rod, in a spiral fashion so as to build up bead diameter while leaving a center hole for stringing.

Safety, UV protection glasses were worn and the above is a view through a pair of such glasses. Most pictures were taken without filter and you will easily discern the difference.

Our tools.

Ox/Ng torch, glasses, colored glass rods, vermiculite canister, kiln.

A yellow disk of molten glass has been formed on the mandrel and now is being rotated so gravity smoothes it out

and we practice

The crowd gathers to choose colors and opaque or transparent glass rods.

and we are shown how to add colored dots, swirls, use tweezers, moulds  pendants and to make multicolored "stringers" or swizzle sticks as the case may be.
